Google CEO Sundar Pichai in an email to the employees shared his plans to bring employees back to offices. Pichai stated that the search giant plans to move to a hybrid work week as COVID-induced lockdowns are being lifted in some countries where the situation has improved. However, in countries like India and Brazil, where COVID cases have surged over the past few months, employees will continue to work from home.
Pichai in his email had encouraged the Google employees from areas where COVID-induced lockdown restrictions have eased to work from home for three days and two days from wherever they work best.
“We’ll move to a hybrid work week when most Googlers spend approximately three days in the office and two days wherever they work best. Since in-office time will be focused on collaboration, your product areas, and functions will help decide which days team will come together in the office. There will also be roles that may need to be on-site more than three days a week due to the nature of the work,” Pichai said in an email to his employees.
Pichai also said that it will offer opportunities to employees to apply for completely remote work based on their role and team needs. “You’ll be able to apply for remote work within your product area or function. As with location transfers, your leads will evaluate whether remote work can support the goals of the team and business. Whether you choose to transfer to a different office or opt for completely remote work, your compensation will be adjusted according to your new location,” he said.
Google employees will be able to temporarily work from a location other than their main office for up to 4 weeks per year. Employees will get more flexibility around the summer holidays.
“I’m optimistic these changes will help us do our best work and have fun doing it, with about 60% of Googlers working together in the office a few days a week, 20% working in new office locations & 20% working from home,”
Facebook on the other hand had said that its employees can continue working from home even after COVID. Employees whose roles do not demand going to the office every day can apply for permanent remote working. The final decision will be taken by the manager. Similarly, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey had announced that employees can work from home forever.
