Sarbananda Sonowal and Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday reached Delhi to hold a crucial meet with the central leadership amid speculation over the next chief minister of Assam.
Amid speculation over the next chief minister of Assam, the incumbent chief minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, and state health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reached Delhi from Guwahati on Saturday.
Himanta Biswa Sarma met party president JP Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on Saturday.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s central leadership had summoned both Sarbananda Sonowal and Himanta Biswa Sarma for a meeting to discuss the leadership issue of the next government.
Though both leaders from Assam reached Delhi on Saturday morning it was Sarma who reached Nadda's residence to meet him and BJP general secretary (Organisation) B L Santhosh, sources told PTI.
Assam state BJP spokesperson Rupam Goswami told Aajtak/India Today TV, "Both Sonowal and Himanta Biswa Sarma had left for Delhi from Guwahati around 7 am on Saturday."
"A meeting to discuss the issue of the next government in Assam is likely to be held in Delhi around 10-30 am on Saturday. The BJP central leadership had asked both Sonowal and Himanta Biswa Sarma to reach before 10-30 am on Saturday," Rupam Goswami said.
Rupam Goswami further said the BJP central leadership wants to discuss the issue of the formation of the next Assam government face-to-face with both Sarbananda Sonowal and Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Sources said the meeting in Delhi is likely to be held in the presence of BJP national president JP Nadda, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, senior leader BL Santosh and other leaders.
The result of the Assam assembly polls was declared on May 2, wherein the BJP-led alliance won 75 out of 126 seats. The BJP alone had won 60 seats, while its ally party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) bagged 9 seats. Meanwhile, six seats were won by the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL).
In 2016 Assam Assembly polls, the BJP had projected Sarbananda Sonowal as the chief ministerial candidate and won the election. But this election, the party didn't announce its chief ministerial candidate.
