Amid rising coronavirus cases, the West Bengal government on Saturday announced a completed lockdown in Bengal from May 16 till 30.
The lockdown will come into effect from tomorrow morning (Sunday) starting from 6 am.
On Friday, Bengal registered its highest single-day spike of 20,846 fresh Covid-19 cases, taking the tally to 10,94,802, the health department said in its bulletin.
Due to the ongoing pandemic situation, all private, government offices will remain shut and will only operate in a dire emergency situation, said West Bengal Chief Secretary Alapan Bandyopadhyay.
Schools, colleges, ferry services, gyms, cinema halls, salons, swimming pools, local trains, metro and inter-state bus/train services will also remain closed, Bandyopadhyay said.
However, markets selling essential items like vegetables, fruits, milk and bread will remain open from 7-10am only, he said.
