Essential commodities will be distributed to flood-affected families in Chittoor, Nellore, Kadapa and Anantapur districts.
The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to distribute essential commodities like rice, dal, edible oil, onions, and potatoes to flood-affected families in Chittoor, Nellore, Kadapa and Anantapur districts free of cost. The decision was taken after a review meeting chaired by CM YS Jagan Mohan Reddy.
The unprecedented rains resulted in reservoirs and rivers in Andhra Pradesh's Rayalseema region to overflow.
A number of areas in Chittoor, Kadapa, Anantapur and Nellore districts are inundated. The heavy rains were caused due to a depression over the Bay of Bengal which crossed the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coast early on Friday.
The Indian Coast Guard, NDRF, SDRF, and fire department teams along with local administration are involved in relief and rescue operations in Nellore district. Over 500 persons were reportedly stranded in over 1,000 houses in the area. The local administration shifted them to relief camps in Nellore.
MANY DEAD, SEVERE DAMAGE CAUSED BY FLOODS
Till Saturday evening, at least 24 people were reported dead while 17 are missing due to the flash floods. As per the local administration, this is the worst flood situation witnessed by Andhra in nearly 30 years.
As per a report, a total of 243 relief camps are operating in all affected districts. As many as 20,923 persons have been evacuated. A population of 23,994 were affected and 1,549 houses were left damaged while 233450 hectares of crop has been damaged. The total value of loss incurred is 231.09 lakh.
TRAFFIC DISRUPTED, TRAINS CANCELLED DUE TO FLOOD
The water has overflown on the railway tracks in the Vijayawada Division of South Central Railway, resulting in the cancellation of several trains. Train number 22863 Howrah-Yesvantpur Express; 12841 Howrah-Chennai Coromandal Express; 12665 Howrah-Kanniyakumari Express; 06169 Purulia-Villupuram Express/Special have been cancelled.
Also, national highway 16 which connects Chennai to Kolkata has been cut off due to the overflowing Penna river.
CRACK AT RAYALA CHERUVU RESERVOIR, 25 VILLAGES EVACUATED
Meanwhile, 25 villages were evacuated and people shifted to relief camps after a crack was reported in Rayala Cheruvu in Tirupati.
According to SP Tirupati Venkatappla Naidu, a crack as big as 8m X 8m was noticed and he alongwith the collector and other officials are camping at the spot. Efforts are underway to stop the leakage. Rayala Cheruvu is one of the oldest and biggest reservoirs in Andhra Pradesh.
