About National Teachers’ Awards
The National Teachers’ Awards were first instituted in 1958 to recognise excellence and commitment of teachers in shaping the minds as well as future of the youth.
From the mid-60s, September 5, the birth anniversary of former President and eminent educationist Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan which was later adopted as India’s Teacher’s Day, was taken as the fixed date for conferring these awards.
Teachers in elementary and secondary schools could be nominated for the awards. They could also self-nominate themselves online. That was followed by a three-tier selection process at district, state and national level.
