How to calculate JEE Main result 2021 marks from answer key

The JEE Main marking scheme offers 4 marks for every correct answer and deducts one mark for every wrong answer.

There is no negative marking in the numerical section.

JEE Mains 2021 result: How are tied resolved?

If two students receive the same score in the JEE Main result 2021, NTA follows a few factors as a tie-breaker and calculates the final rank based on them.

Here are the JEE Main tie-breakers in the order they are followed for Paper 1 (BE/BTech):

Step 1: Those with more marks in maths will get better ranks even if their total marks are the same.

Step 2: The student scoring more in Physics will rank higher.

Step 3: The student scoring more in Chemistry will rank higher.

Step 4: The student who has fewer negative responses will rank higher.

Here are the JEE Main tie-breakers in the order they are followed for Paper 2 (BArch/BPlanning):

Step 1: Those with more marks in maths will get better ranks even if their total marks are the same.

Step 2: The student scoring more in the Aptitude test will rank higher.

Step 3: The student scoring more in the Drawing test will rank higher.

Step 4: The student who has fewer negative responses will rank higher.

JEE Main result 2021: How are percentiles calculated?

The JEE Mains 2021 result takes percentiles into account and not the total marks received by students.

Percentile scores are given to students based on how they performed in comparison with other students who appeared for JEE Main.

Each JEE Main session would get separate percentile scores. Vey high scorers get 100 percentile marks. Marks for other students are then normalised.

Here is NTA’s normalisation formula:

(100 x no. of candidates in the particular JEE Main session whose raw score is equal to or less than the candidate)/ total no. of candidates in the particular JEE Main session

For top colleges in India, the JEE Main scorecard is now vital for admission purposes.

This is because due to the Covid-19 pandemic and ensuing board exam cancellations, top engineering colleges are not looking at board exam marks for creating the merit lists.

JEE Mains 2021 result: How are percentile and normalisation different?

Percentile scores are calculated by comparing the raw scores various candidates among each other.

The percentile of candidates across the session is then normalised. Normalisation of marks is carried out to compare the marks of candidates across exams that are held in multiple sessions. Large education tests conducted in India also use this method.

The percentile score will be the normalized score for the examination (instead of the raw marks of the candidate) and shall be used for the preparation of the merit lists. Percentile scores will be calculated up to 7 decimal places to avoid the bunching effect and reduce ties.

JEE Main result 2021: Qualifying cut-off vs admission cut-off

The JEE Main result has two types of cut-off marks.

The JEE Main qualifying cut-off is the minimum marks students will need to qualify for JEE Advanced.

The JEE Main admission cut-off will be released by JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) in the form of opening and closing ranks for each institute after the results of JEE Advanced are out.

JEE Advanced 2021 to allow candidates from JEE Main 2020 and 2021

Even though JEE Advanced usually allows only those candidates who cleared JEE Main in the same year to appear, this year, JEE Main qualifiers from both 2020 and 2021 would be able to appear for the same.

This is because the Covid-19 pandemic which was raging in 2020 prevented many JEE Main 2020 qualifiers to appear for JEE Advanced 2020.

What to check in JEE scorecard

Candidates should check their name, roll number, personal details and the calculation of marks.

The JEE Main scorecard is vital this year as engineering colleges are not looking at Class 12 board exam marks for their merit lists.

In case of any error, students should report it to NTA at the earliest.

Note that the NTA website doesn’t keep the JEE Main result for more than 90 days. Once you are able to view it, you should download the JEE result and keep a print out of the same.

In March, former Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' had announced new criteria for BArch admissions this year.

“In view of the Covid-19 pandemic, admission eligibility for BArch degree course has been relaxed for academic session 2021-2022. Minimum requirement of 50% in PCM and aggregate of 10+2 is relaxed to only pass in Class 12 with PCM subjects/10+3 Diploma with Mathematics,” Pokhriyal had tweeted.

What after JEE Main?

If you haven’t received a good score in JEE Main, don’t worry. Many engineering colleges such as the NITs, GFTIs, IIITs, state-level engineering colleges, and many private engineering colleges take admissions based on the JEE Main score. You can apply for admission to those colleges or try your luck again next year.

Note that due to the Covid-19 circumstances, the criterion of minimum 75% marks in Class 12 board exams for admission to NITs and CFTIs has been done away with and admissions will be solely based on JEE Main 2020 marks.

You may also discover that your JEE Main January score is better than your JEE Main September score in that case, you can go ahead for admissions based on your JEE Main January marks.
