Delhi halts vaccination of 18+ group as stocks run out, Kejriwal says Centre must buy doses in 24 hours

Delhi is halting the vaccination drive for the 18-45 age group from Saturday as vaccine stocks have run out, announced CM Arvind Kejriwal.

Kejriwal announced that vaccination for the 18+ group will be halted in Delhi from Saturday.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has announced that vaccination for the 18+ age group in Delhi is being halted from today (Saturday) as the vaccine stocks have run out.

Kejriwal addressed the media on Saturday afternoon and said, “Vaccination for the 18+ category halted in Delhi from today. Vaccine stock for this category has been consumed. Due to this, their vaccination centres have been shut. Only a few vaccines are available at some centres which will be administered today.”

Kejriwal further said that Delhi would need 80 lakh doses of Covid vaccine to inoculate its entire population and the Centre must immediately buy vaccines from foreign nations to supply to the states.

"The Centre should buy Covid-19 vaccines from foreign countries within 24 hours and distribute these among states," said Kejriwal. The Delhi chief minister further said that many countries have stored more vaccines than what they need and the Centre should request them to hand over those vaccines to India.

He also added that foreign companies should be allowed to produce vaccines in India while also suggesting that the Centre should order many other companies to make vaccines as Bharat Biotech has agreed to share Covaxin's formula with other firms.

AAP MLA Atishi had said on Friday that in the past one week, Delhi was forced to shut 235 of the 368 inoculation centres for the 18+ age group due to a shortage of vaccines.

"The remaining 133 sites will (also) be shut on Saturday, which means the inoculation drive for this age group will have to be stopped temporarily from Monday,” she added. Vaccination drive is not carried out in Delhi on Sundays.

Atishi said only 42,380 doses were left for the 18-44 category as on Friday morning. Delhi has received 8.17 lakh vaccine doses for this age group so far, of which 7.75 lakh had been utilised by Friday morning.
