 Coronavirus news live updates: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be holding a review meeting of the coronavirus situation across states in a virtual meet with chief ministers. PM Modi is expected to discuss the ground situation in tackling Covid-19 along with the coronavirus vaccine distribution plan. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee are also likely to attend the virtual meet on Tuesday. Meanwhile, India’s coronavirus case count has crossed the 91 lakh-mark while over 1.33 lakh people have died already. Several states have moved back to reimposing restrictions in public movement, including night curfews and checks on big gatherings such as weddings etc. Delhi, which saw another spike in coronavirus cases recently, has put curbs on weddings and ordered few markets to shut down on weekends to stop Covid-19 from spreading further. Several top coronavirus vaccine contenders such as Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Sputnik V have declared positive results from their clinical trials that have shown effective results against coronavirus. In India, 5 coronavirus vaccine candidates are in advanced stages of development, out of which 4 are in Phase II/III and one is in Phase-I/II trials. Delhi reports 4,454 new coronavirus cases

Delhi reported 4,454 new coronavirus cases on Monday with 7,216 recoveries and 121 deaths in the last 24 hours, said the Delhi Health Department. Delhi’s total case count is at 5,34,317 while the total recoveries are at 4,88,476. Active cases are at 37,329 while Delhi’s coronavirus death toll has reached 8,512.

Only 5% students attend classes as Maharashtra reopens schools

Only 5% of the total enrolled students in Maharashtra attended schools and colleges on Monday which were allowed to reopen for the first time after remaining shut for the last eight months due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Maharashtra education department had allowed schools to reopen for students of classes 9 to 12 with strict adherence to Covid-19 protocol. Attendance is, however, not mandatory. Civic bodies like Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai and Panvel had directed that schools in these cities will remain closed until the end of this year due to rising number of Covid-19 cases.

Andaman & Nicobar reports 15 new Covid cases

Andaman and Nicobar Islands have reported 15 new coronavirus cases on Monday, taking the total number of cases in the UT to 4,656 including 4,453 recoveries, 142 active cases and 61 deaths.

Assam reports 169 new Covid-19 cases

Assam has reported 169 new coronavirus cases on Monday. Total Covid-19 cases in Assam now stands at 2,11,682 including 2,07,525 recoveries, 3,179 active cases, and 975 deaths, said Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

PM Modi to hold 2 meetings with CMs today on Covid-19 strategy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold two virtual meetings with chief ministers of states and Union territories on Tuesday to review the Covid-19 situation and discuss vaccine distribution strategy. PM Modi is expected to hold two back-to-back meetings, one with eight states with high caseloads and another with all states and UTs to discuss vaccine distribution strategy. PM Modi, till now, has held several virtual meetings with states over the coronavirus situation. According to sources, the Centre is worried over two different trends in the Covid-19 spread. While the national daily Covid-19 case count has remained below 50,000 for some time, several urban centres have witnessed a surge, resulting in enforcement of several measures, including curfews in some cities. PM Modi's first meeting on Tuesday will be with the CMs of states showing a spike in Covid-19 cases. These include Kerala, West Bengal, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh. The first meeting will be held between 10:30 am and 12 pm. In the second meeting, PM Modi will meet CMs of all states. The discussion will be on the Centre’s plan for quick and effective distribution of the coronavirus vaccine, as and when it becomes available.
