The BJP on Tuesday released its election manifesto for the Maharashtra Assembly polls with a promise of a Bharat Ratna for Hindu Mahasabha leader Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.
The State unit of the party said it would ask the NDA government at the Centre to confer India’s highest civilian award on Savarkar.
Releasing the manifesto, BJP working president J.P. Nadda and State president Chandrakant Patil said party had fulfilled the promises made in the previous manifesto, and the next manifesto will have at its core the dream of a drought-free State.
2. Srinagar: Farooq Abdullah’s Sister, Daughter Arrested During Protest
Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah’s sister and daughter were among a dozen women arrested by J&K Police Tuesday, after preventing them from holding a sit-in to protest the Centre’s 5 August decision to scrap the state’s special status and bifurcate J&K into two Union Territories.
All the women, including social activists and members of civil society, were booked under Section 107 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) — preventive custody — and shifted to the Srinagar Central Jail.
Those arrested include Abdullah’s sister Suraya Abdullah, his daughter Safiya Abdullah, Delhi-based activist Sushoba Bharve. Also arrested were Hawa Bashir, the wife of former Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir Bashir Ahmad Khan, retired Kashmir University media coordinator Muslim Jan and activist Qurat-ul-Ain besides others.
The Ayodhya appeals hearing in the Supreme Court is likely to end on October 16, two days before the deadline.
Appearing before the Ayodhya Bench led by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi on Tuesday, senior advocate K Parasaran, for the Hindu side, said Muslims could pray in several mosques around Ayodhya, but the birthplace of Lord Ram cannot be shifted.
In what may probably be the last day of the hearing in the marathon appeals on 16 October, Chief Justice Gogoi said, senior advocate CS Vaidynathan for the Hindu parties could continue for another 45 minutes, followed by senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan for an hour. Then the court would give four 45-minute slots to assorted parties before winding up the case for judgment.
4. ‘What’s the Hurry’: Court Lets ED Question, Arrest Chidambaram at Tihar
Former finance minister P Chidambaram may be arrested by the Enforcement Directorate at Tihar jail after one round of questioning, a Delhi court ruled on the request of the agency on Tuesday. Chidambaram, who was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation in the INX Media case on 21 August, has spent 40 days in national capital Delhi’s central prison, Tihar.
The Enforcement Directorate had asked the court for permission to arrest and interrogate Chidambaram the INX Media case. Special Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar accepted both, but in the reverse format. Kuhar said the agency would first interrogate him and could arrest Chidambaram only if required after questioning him once.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta promptly offered to put Chidambaram through a 20-minute round of questioning in an adjacent room at the court complex right away.
5. Elgaar Parishad Case: Bombay HC Refuses Bail to Three Activists, Says ‘Active Members’ of CPI (Maoist)
The Bombay High Court on Tuesday refused to grant bail to activists Sudha Bharadwaj, Arun Ferreira and Vernon Gonsalves, observing that they are “senior active members” of banned terrorist organisation Communist Party of India (Maoist).
The activists were arrested by the Pune Police on 28 August 2018, in connection with the Elgaar Parishad case, for their alleged links with the banned organisation. They were booked under the provisions of the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Indian Penal Code.
In three separate orders, Justice Sarang Kotwal said that the activists were given the most important tasks of recruiting cadres and there is material in the chargesheet to show that they had actively worked towards fulfilling that responsibility.
6. ‘Under Stress’, Three PMC Bank Depositors Die Within 24 Hours
Over three weeks after the RBI moved against PMC Bank for various irregularities, and imposed a curb on withdrawals, three of the cooperative bank’s account-holders, including a 51-year-old who had lost his job with the defunct Jet Airways in April, died over the last 24 hours in Mumbai.
Two of the deaths have been attributed to heart attacks with families and friends claiming that they were under “severe stress”. The third death was that of a 39-year-old doctor, who was “suffering from depression” and committed suicide, police said.
7. Our Share of River Waters Will No More Go to Pakistan: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said India would put to use its share of water from the rivers flowing to Pakistan and ensure that every single drop is used for country's farmer. The work on this had started.
Mr. Modi, who was addressing an election rally at Charkhi Dadri in Haryana, said the river waters that rightfully belonged to India had been flowing to Pakistan for the last 70 years. It would not happen any more.
“For the last 70 years, the waters that belonged to India and farmers of Haryana were going to Pakistan. Modi will stop it and bring it to your households,” he said.
8. ‘Next War Will Be Fought With Indigenous Weapons and Will Win It’: Army Chief Bipin Rawat
In an unequivocal push for inclusion of indigenous technology in the armed forces Army chief Bipin Rawat and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval said on Tuesday that it will give India an edge over its adversaries.
Rawat said India will fight the next war with indigenous weapons and win it, and the time was ripe to focus on future warfare. “We are looking at systems for future warfare. We have to start looking at development of cyber, space, laser, electronic and robotic technologies and artificial intelligence,” Rawat said at the 41st DRDO directors conference in New Delhi.
Lauding the Defence Research and Development Organisation, the Army chief said DRDO has made strides to ensure that the needs of the armed forces are met through home-grown solutions.
9. ‘Speculative Views’: Praful Patel After ED Notice on Alleged Land Deal With Dawood Aide
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Tuesday issued summons to Nationalist Congress Party leader Praful Patel, asking him to appear before it in Mumbai on Friday for questioning in connection with an alleged land deal with late gangster Iqbal Mirchi, who was a close aide of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, officials said.
The ED is among several agencies examining the purported land deal involving Mirchi’s relatives for alleged links with Patel.
According to ED officials, Patel’s Millennium Developers Pvt Ltd constructed a building called Ceejay House in 2006-07 and its third and fourth floors were transferred to Mirchi’s wife Hajra Iqbal. The land on which the building tower was made is said to be owned by Mirchi. Investigators claim the land was purchased from the proceeds of crime of money laundering, drugs trafficking and alleged extortion crimes, PTI reported.
